Old Gal Old Guy: Two Sides of a Different Coin

One of the Super Bowl commercials tonight featured two old ladies chasing a guy in their motorized grocery carts.

“Did you like that one?” my husband asked

“No.”

“Did you think it was making fun of us?” Us meaning old people.

“Yes.”

The two old ladies ended up victorious after much chasing and swinging through the air. They retrieved a bag of snacks that the bad guy had grabbed away from them in the grocery store. They got their snack back, but they looked like complete fruit loops in the process. The idea was for them to appear unexpectedly energetic, you know, feisty. This is a favorite word to describe old women, that and sharp as a tack.

I shouldn’t be so sensitive about the depiction of old woman. Well, maybe I should.

Clint Eastwood turned 93 today or so it said on social media. His photo carried the words, “the greatest cowboy.” Apparently, he wasn’t caught riding his motorized grocery cart after some varmint who stole his grub.

If I could choose between being a cute old gal and the greatest cowboy, well, you know, it’s hard to trade endearing for formidable. I guess.

  1. I find “feisty” offensive. Have you ever heard a man of ANY age described as feisty? Maybe assertive, even aggressive — but feisty is a neutral alternate for “bitchy.”

  2. I saw this on the news this morning. Everyone behind the desk got a great laugh. I did not.

  3. I just googled “Women’s Liberation Movement” to grab a forgotten name (I’m old), and discovered that it is discussed as being in the past, that it’s over, which was news to me. It’s not over, we’re still fighting for a certain kind of recognition even as “old women.” I never find old lady characters to be funny because we tend to disappear from recognition after a certain age and just get “cute” or become one of the “girls.” I would rather be FORMIDABLE.

  4. yes, that is certainly annoying, now older people, especially women are portrayed a certain way and using certain terms, based own their age, and not who they are
