Seriously

Grand Marais Deck (2)

I need me a big old belly laugh. I need a really good, roaring laugh that goes on for a long time. I need a laugh like my daughter and I used to have in the kitchen when she would say something and I would say something and conversation would end because we’d be laughing too hard to talk. We’d quiet down, look at each other and erupt again in laughter. That’s what I need.

I would like something to be insanely funny. Not humorous, not comical, cute or whimsical. But not much qualifies.

Already tending to the dark (I spin like a compass needle in the direction of anything sad, depressing, maudlin; my tank is empty, fill me up with angst), I have to travel extra far to get to where things are funny. And people who might try to bring something funny to me will have to climb into some deep narrow holes (I’m in here, it’s okay, it just looks depressing, next week I’m going to redecorate).

I figure I can become melancholy about yet another thing – why nothing is insanely funny – or I can double down on my quest for the high quality belly laugh, the yeti of joy.

I start my hunt.

  1. Jan.. another one lining up behind you. I had friends I used to have games nights with a few times a week. Four were my next door neighbors on either side and another would come visit at the drop of a hat or an invitation to play Mexican Train. We would be weak with laughter countless times during the afternoon/evening and often a game that should have taken 3 hours took 6 hours. They all moved away with a year’s period and I’ve never replaced that laughter in the years since. I, too, long to be carried away by joyfulness. Actually, a few weeks ago some new neighbors and two old friends came over and it was close to the old dynamic. I, too, need to strive more for that. I miss it more than anything.

  2. “I spin like a compass in the direction of anything sad.” It’s like you are writing my thoughts, if I could think with that kind of beautiful clarity! I’d send you a couple of things that have made me laugh recently, but I don’t want to be obnoxious and I don’t know what your tastes in humor are. I do hope you catch sight of your yeti soon. Nothing resets my mood thermostat like the kind of laughter you describe. Good luck!
p.s. Love that photo. Another almost guaranteed mood enhancer for me: dog-on-lap =)

    • Knace, send those “things.” I want to see them even if Jan doesn’t and bet she’s willing to take a chance on them as well. Anything for a good laugh. For me, it is 4 kittens in bed with me..They should be required in hospitals, hospices and beds in general.
