In the afternoon, she’d sit by the window, the jigsaw puzzle spread on the table, and, for hours, she’d pick up the pieces and put them down, the mystery companion to her misery.

Oh, such a punch with so few words. This is sad…I can picture her confusion as she studied the pieces. (My grandma would wander and often stand in the kitchen. When I’d ask if she needed something, she’d just say, “I don’t know.”)
My mother (the jigsaw puzzle doer) liked to rearrange and stack canned goods in the pantry. She seemed content doing that. Sometimes she would decorate the cans with Christmas bows. It made her happy at the time.
oh, does that make me a bad mother? I buy puzzles for my kids all the time!!!
