Memorial Day Falls Different This Year

We all have to become warriors in some way.

That’s my thought this Memorial Day.

I don’t know what my way is. But I’m going to study on it. Get smarter. Have new goals.

Be braver.

A few days ago, a friend said that this was her moment and she was setting out to do things that ordinarily would scare her. She asks herself, “Would I hide someone?” She doesn’t ask me, and I am glad. I want to think I would, but I don’t know.

I’ve never had to think like this before. And here I am, at 77, wondering how I become a braver person, one willing to hide someone.

Who and what will I protect and how? What am I willing to do?

There is a point to Memorial Day. I think this introspection about what we are willing to do for our country is probably it.

Nothing about this time is easy.

  1. These past couple of years, just staying alive has been my BIG goal. The house is not only full, but over-full. My entire family has moved in.

Meanwhile, via endless heaps of emails, I am asked for my opinion, but if I don’t ALSO send money, no one is interested. My opinion, needs, concerns are of zero interest unless money is attached. Those of us on a tight fixed income can’t send money constantly. We don’t have it. Maybe by listening to us, our party might begin to be someplace that feels like “the right place.” I can’t do a lot of things I used to do, but I CAN write, I can help — but there has to be a way to be involved where sending money isn’t the only expression allowed. I resent it, too. This is supposed to be the party that supports those who are struggling but you couldn’t tell it from here. With all the horrors going on, might it not be a gracious gesture for the Democratic Party to loosen the net to allow the struggling people who DON’T have money to participate? Isn’t that the definition of what is wrong with the party?

  2. I do think it is important that we find something we can do. Turning out heads is not an option.
