Snakes and Other Plants of Thought Friday Round-Up

This may have been a terrible error in judgement. Only time will tell. My snake plant was seeming to be choked and unhappy. This is remarkable because until about five years ago, the same plant was in a pot the size of a large coffee mug. I was a savage with the winnowing, though, and I regret none of it. Pray that my dear plant regains its posture because right now it’s sagging with fatigue.

We went on a field trip but then so did hundreds of school kids. After hearing it talked about for years, we finally set out to visit the Milton House Museum, the only Underground Railroad site in Wisconsin open for tours. Except today it wasn’t because every kid from miles around was there for Civil War Living History Days. And it was grand to see, in a way, all those kids standing in line to go in the Museum and then down to the tunnel that leads to a log cabin where enslaved people sought refuge. We let them have at it. We went to lunch at Cindy’s diner down the street.

I serve on the Commission on Aging with a friend who is deaf. He is a leader and a heavy-duty advocate. When he is working, he has two American Sign Language interpreters with him. They interpret everything – policy positions, data, family stories, quips, questions, and bad jokes. They are fast and expressive and fearless, probably, though I am no judge, the best interpreters around. They are the means by which my friend expresses himself and affects the world. I guess I’m saying, I’m so glad this is a thing in this world because it gives us him.

It is raining very hard and it’s delicious. I love a good storm that isn’t at night.

I’ve heard that the men on the Supreme Court have a boys’ club thing. This fits with their conservative views, that they would have a hard time creating camaraderie with a woman, even another conservative. But the progressive women on the bench don’t seem to have a problem opening their circle to a conservative woman. I am heartened by this. The embrace of other women is powerful with unspoken sameness, blood trust. Subterranean threads. I believe this bodes well. Only time will tell.

  1. <3 those damn boys' clubs seem to have infiltrated everything and they stay tight as thieves (literally in this case), and good for the women opening their circle to acb
