100 Word Story: Little Boy Birding

“Your son brought a bird to school today.”

“Oh. Was it a dead bird?”

“That’s an odd question. Does he collect dead animals?”

“No, of course not.”

The teacher nodded toward the boy sitting cross-legged near the swings. “I think you should talk to him.”

Mom cocked her head to show her puzzlement. “I try to talk to him now and then. Is there a special topic?”

“Yes. The immorality of keeping a bird in one’s pocket all day.”

“Immorality?”

“It’s oppressive behavior. He should know that by now.”

In the car, on the way home, the bird took flight.
