Perhaps the Ice Cream is Melting

Do you think all this is sustainable?

All what?

You know, your lifestyle. Tooling around town protesting things, writing weird stories, having all your camping equipment on your front porch.

Probably not. We’re getting pretty close to the brink here.

The brink?

Yeah. That cliff where you’re an energetic old person who everybody admires and then overnight you need two people to help you get out of the car.

How do you feel about that?

Not good. My car is already hard to get out of, it being low and sleek and all.

Like you. Ah, well, maybe the old you. Well, you’re still sleek. Never mind. Are you worried about the future?

Kind of. When I see people I used to know who are now what I would call ‘extremely old,’ yeah, I feel the clock ticking.

So what do you do about that sense of impending doom?

Today, I put on my Get Out the Vote t-shirt and dropped voting reminders on forty doors. I wore a bright pink hat, blue jeans, and my favorite boots and clicked down the street with my clipboard.

That helped?

Yes. Smiling at people also helps. So does buying a fresh loaf of French bread, a box of white chocolate chip cookies, and a pint of salted caramel waffle cone ice cream that cost $6. And taking the dogs for a good walk, that always helps.

So, basically you’re saying you know how to make all this sustainable?

No.I know how to not think about it.

  1. Ah Jan. Perfect! Thank you. (I just finished watching and listening to 11 minutes of the Tao Te Ching. Ready now for the day and to talk mySelf into ice cream…

  2. Wondering about getting old, or even extremely old, but having the will and energy to act upon those thoughts and not succumb to them says to me that you aren’t there yet Jan. Start to really worry when you can’t even imagine seriously using the camping gear, no matter where it’s stored or Punchy and Swirl haven’t been walked in months. I personally see nothing wrong in not thinking about it for as long as possible.
