100 Word Story: The Visitor

“Are you sad about the future or glad about it? It’s an easy enough question.”

“Why do I have to pick? Why can’t a person be sad and glad at that same time?”

“Because that’s ambivalence and that’s unattractive and boring.”

“Or it makes for nuanced conversations which might be over your head.”

She spreads out the wadded up tissue on her lap, carefully smoothing out the wrinkles. Then, she folds the tissue into a one inch square and puts it in the pocket of her robe. She stands, ties the thick belt tighter.

“Is the robe warm enough?”

“Quite.”
