Childlike

Across the farmer’s field and down the hill where the woods began, past the cave large enough for just one person was a rocky pond full of ridges and stuck up branches where I would go as a young girl with my white just polished skates and pretend to be an Olympic skater where I would glide on one foot and stretch out my arms on the patch of ice that was clear and smooth, all of this reminding me of my son leaping up from watching the last quarter of a football game to run outside and play catch with himself in the street, first throwing the football high in the air and then running past the neighbor’s house and the next neighbor’s house to catch with two hands a ball he would hold to his chest like it was a swaddled baby.
