Say Hey from Starve Hollow

We pulled it off.

We finally remembered how to set up the tent and I blew up our new mattress for our deluxe double cot and then we had a beer and made a fabulous dinner of Italian sausage and salad.

We are six feet from the shore of a little inland land so every time I wondered why we were subjecting ourselves to the major packing and unpacking and generalized gross inconvenience that is tent camping, I’d look over my shoulder at the sun setting on this lovely lake, a rowboat with a lone fisherman silhouetted in the end of the day light. I’d never see this in a hotel. I’d see the parking lot and the air would smell of carpet and floor cleaner instead of grass and a lake thick with fish, bass I bet.

So I am a glad person although the air mattress recalls the water beds of the 70’s and I’m convinced that the cot will collapse in the middle of the night. The dogs are wandering in the small space left for them in the tent. We brought them their own sleeping bag so they can get the full camping experience. I’m sad I won’t be sleeping with Swirl’s big head on my foot since we’ve elevated ourselves. It’s best but I’ll miss that.

  1. You are either very adventuresome, very brave, for just plain crazy. I absolutely love camping for all the reasons you describe about motels (add restaurants when you need one) but also need some creature comforts now that I am 3/4s of the way to a century old.

    • Yes, I get it. Tent camping is great until my back starts to seize up. 5 days seems to be the outer limit.

      • Oh my. Does it help to be off the ground? Can you roll out of bed instead of having to lift yourself from the ground? I really don’t like the alternative of staying in hotels night after night. And having a travel trailer means upkeep and finding somewhere to park it when you aren’t using it.

      • We have a double cot and an inflatable mattress. It’s way better than the ground but gets old after a while. Lol

      • For me not very graceful – but still able to do it.
