She could watch everything from the loft, her old pony walking slowly on his tether, the golden crown of his mane, her father opening the gate to the trailer to take him away.

This reminds me of that sad scene in Black Beauty when the monk leads Beauty’s friend the little pony away to live out the rest of his life somewhere else. Now I’m all teary-eyed.
