Happiness. It's relative.

So much has happened, this story seems like it was written twenty years ago, not just three. It has an important message for me – maybe for others, too.

What happens here on Red's Wrap is all over the map. There is no single theme, no overarching gripe, no malady of my own or others that dominates. I write about what seems important or interesting at the moment and what aims me toward hope. I write stories, essays, poems - whatever fits the day and the mood. Nothing stays the same, here or anywhere. That's a good thing. Happiness. It's relative.

Our friars make a valiant effort to find relatives when someone dies and give the person a proper sendoff. Two years ago we lost a very ill young woman who refused to come in and only felt safe under the highway. The church paid for her hospitalization. One night she came barefoot to the friary in her nightgown. One of the friar’s, heartbroken, went upstairs and gave her his winter coat. I was only able to make eye contact with her because talking scared her. Still I was very sad to learn she had died. Shannon.
That’s a very moving story. And a beautiful example of being present when nothing else will work. Shannon.
Presence is often underrated, but it is a form of love.

Shorty sounds like she was a good friend to people and an interesting person. I’m so glad she had a proper funeral.
